How to Activate Windows 10 in 2026: Product Key & Activation Help
Updated 16 August 2026 by EcoKeys UK
Quick answer: to activate Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation. If Windows is not already activated with a digital licence, select Change product key and enter your 25-character Windows product key.
Before entering a key, check that the edition installed on your PC — such as Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro — matches the licence you are trying to activate.

How do I check if Windows 10 is already activated?
Before entering a new product key, check the activation status of Windows. Your PC may already have a digital licence and may not need another key.
- Click the Start button.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
- Check the activation message displayed on the page.
If Windows reports that it is already activated, you normally do not need to enter another product key.
Important: also check which Windows edition is installed. A Windows 10 Home installation needs an appropriate Home licence, while Windows 10 Pro requires a licence valid for Pro.
How to activate Windows 10 with a product key
A Windows product key normally contains 25 characters in a format similar to:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
If you already have a valid Windows 10 product key, follow these steps:
- Make sure the PC is connected to the internet.
- Click Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character product key.
- Select Next and follow the activation instructions shown by Windows.

Windows will then attempt to verify the licence with Microsoft’s activation service. If the product key is valid for the installed edition and there are no activation issues, Windows should display confirmation that the operating system is activated.

What is a Windows 10 digital licence?
Windows does not always require you to manually enter a product key. Some PCs activate using a digital licence associated with the device.
If Windows 10 was previously activated correctly on the same hardware, it may reactivate automatically after Windows is reinstalled once the PC connects to the internet.
Linking an eligible digital licence to a Microsoft account can also help with reactivation after certain hardware changes.
Do not enter another product key unnecessarily. Check Settings > Update & Security > Activation first to see whether Windows already has an activated digital licence.
Windows 10 Home vs Pro: make sure the edition matches
One of the first things to check when Windows will not activate is the edition installed on the PC.
Windows 10 Home
If Windows 10 Home is installed, use a licence that is valid for the Home edition.
Windows 10 Pro
If Windows 10 Pro is installed, the licence must support the Professional edition.
You can check the installed edition from the Windows Activation page before attempting activation.
If the edition and licence do not match, repeatedly entering the key will not solve the underlying problem.
How to change a Windows 10 product key
You may need to change the product key if Windows was installed using a different key, if you are replacing an existing licence, or if you are activating the correct edition after installation.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the new 25-character key.
- Select Next.
- Follow the instructions shown on screen.

Why won’t my Windows 10 product key activate?
An activation failure does not automatically mean the product key is faulty. Several different problems can prevent Windows from activating.
1. The Windows edition does not match the licence
Check whether the PC is running Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro and make sure the product key is intended for that edition.
2. The product key was entered incorrectly
Check all 25 characters carefully. Copy and paste the key where possible rather than typing it manually.
3. The PC is not connected to the internet
Online activation needs a working internet connection so Windows can communicate with Microsoft’s activation service.
4. Windows was recently reinstalled
A PC that previously used a digital licence may reactivate automatically after connecting to the internet. Check the Activation page before attempting to replace the existing licence.
5. Significant hardware has been changed
Replacing important hardware, particularly the motherboard, can affect Windows activation because the licence may be associated with the previous hardware configuration.
6. Microsoft is displaying an activation error code
If Windows displays an error such as 0xC004F050 or another activation code, note the complete error before troubleshooting. The exact code helps identify whether the problem relates to the edition, licence, hardware or activation service.

How to use the Windows Activation Troubleshooter
Windows includes an Activation Troubleshooter for certain activation problems.
If it is available on your PC:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the instructions Windows provides.
The troubleshooter is particularly useful when an activated Windows installation has been affected by a hardware change.
How to reactivate Windows 10 after changing hardware
A significant hardware change can cause an activated Windows installation to lose its activation state. Replacing a motherboard is a common example.
If your digital licence was linked to your Microsoft account before the hardware change, the Windows Activation Troubleshooter may provide an option to identify the device and reactivate it.
- Sign in to Windows using an administrator account.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot if it is shown.
- Select the option indicating that you recently changed hardware on the device when available.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the digital licence.
- Follow Microsoft’s reactivation instructions.
Whether a licence can be transferred or reactivated depends on the licence and the circumstances, so do not assume every Windows licence can be moved to a different PC.
Can you still activate Windows 10 after support ended?
Windows 10 reached the end of standard Microsoft support on 14 October 2025.
End of support does not mean that existing Windows 10 computers suddenly stop working. It means the operating system has reached the end of its normal support lifecycle.
Microsoft no longer provides the normal free technical assistance, feature updates and security updates for standard Windows 10 installations after that date.
Important: activation status and Windows support status are different things. A PC can show Windows as activated while still running an operating system that has reached the end of standard support.
Should I use Windows 10 or upgrade to Windows 11?
If your PC supports Windows 11, moving to the current Windows generation is generally the better long-term option because standard Windows 10 support has ended.
Some users may still require Windows 10 for older hardware, specialist software or compatibility reasons. Before purchasing another Windows licence, first check which version is installed and whether the PC can run Windows 11.
Not sure which Windows licence you need?
The EcoKeys Windows Licence Finder can help you check your current Windows edition, activation status, Windows 11 compatibility and whether Home or Pro is the appropriate edition.
Frequently asked questions about Windows 10 activation
Do I need a product key if Windows 10 already says it is activated?
Usually no. If Windows reports that it is activated with a valid digital licence, entering another product key is normally unnecessary.
Where do I enter my Windows 10 product key?
Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and select Change product key.
How many characters are in a Windows product key?
A standard Windows product key contains 25 characters arranged in five groups.
Why does Windows say my product key doesn’t work?
Check the Windows edition first. Other possible causes include an incorrectly entered key, hardware changes, activation service problems or licence restrictions. If an error code is shown, keep a copy of the complete error message.
Can changing the motherboard affect Windows activation?
Yes. A significant hardware change such as replacing the motherboard can cause Windows to require reactivation.
Can I activate Windows 10 without internet access?
Online activation is the normal method. Microsoft also provides activation assistance and, in applicable situations, telephone activation options.
Does Windows 10 still receive security updates?
Standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Customers using special Microsoft Extended Security Update arrangements may have different update provisions, but that is separate from normal Windows 10 support.
Need a Windows licence?
If you have checked your PC and know which Windows edition you require, compare the Windows licences available from EcoKeys. If you are unsure, use the Licence Finder first so you do not purchase the wrong edition.
