How to Check Your Microsoft Office Version and Activation Status

Ecokeys Support Team
3 minute read

This guide shows you how to check which Microsoft Office product is installed and whether Office currently shows as activated.

The information on this screen is particularly useful when Ecokeys is troubleshooting an activation or licensing problem.

Approximate time 1–2 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Changes your computer? No
You are only checking information Do not change your licence, sign out of Office or uninstall anything while completing this check.

Step 1 — Open Microsoft Word

Select the Start button at the bottom of the screen and type:

Word

Open Microsoft Word.

Word will not open? Return to your Ecokeys Support Check and choose the option advising that Word or Office will not open. You will need a different troubleshooting route.

Step 2 — Open the Office Account Page

With Word open, select:

File → Account

The Account page should now appear.

Step 3 — Find Product Information

Look for the section called:

Product Information

This area normally shows the Office product installed on your computer and its current activation status.

You may see wording such as:

  • Product Activated
  • Unlicensed Product
  • Activation Required
  • Product Activation Failed
  • Microsoft 365
  • Another Office product or edition
Do not try to correct this screen yet Even if Office says Unlicensed Product or Activation Failed, do not reinstall Office or enter different licence information unless your Ecokeys Support Check asks you to.

Step 4 — Check Which Office Product Is Shown

In the same Product Information area, look at the name of the Office product.

For example, it may show:

  • Microsoft Office 2024 Professional Plus
  • Microsoft Office 2024 Standard
  • Microsoft Office 2021
  • Microsoft 365
  • Another Office edition
The product shown is important If the Office product displayed does not match the product supplied with your Ecokeys order, tell the Support Check exactly what you can see. This can explain why activation is failing.

Step 5 — Check Whether an Account Is Signed In

While you are on the Account page, look at the user/account information.

You may see:

  • A Microsoft account email address
  • A work or school account
  • No account signed in
Do not sign out yet A signed-in Microsoft or work account can sometimes affect what Office displays. Leave the account exactly as it is until the Support Check tells you what to do next.

Step 6 — Take a Screenshot

If your Ecokeys Support Check has asked for a screenshot, leave the File → Account screen open.

Press:

Windows key + Shift + S

Capture the complete Product Information area so Ecokeys can see the Office product and activation status.

Protect your personal information If your email address is visible and you would prefer not to include it, you can crop or cover the email address. Please make sure the Office product name and activation status remain visible.

Step 7 — Return to Your Ecokeys Support Check

Choose the option that best matches what Word shows:

  • Product Activated
  • Unlicensed Product
  • Activation Required
  • Product Activation Failed
  • Microsoft 365 is showing
  • A different Office version is showing
  • I'm not sure what the screen means
That's all we need from this screen The Office product, activation status and signed-in account information usually give us enough information to choose the correct next troubleshooting step.
