Who Should Choose Windows 10 Pro?

Windows 10 Pro may still be appropriate when:

  • Your PC does not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11.
  • Legacy software or specialist equipment specifically requires Windows 10.
  • You are restoring or maintaining a compatible refurbished computer.
  • Your organisation requires the familiar Windows 10 environment for a particular workflow.
  • You need to upgrade an existing Windows 10 Home installation to Pro.
  • You require BitLocker, Remote Desktop host, Group Policy, Hyper-V or domain-join features.

Does your PC support Windows 11? For a compatible modern PC, Windows 11 Pro is the better long-term choice because Windows 10 has reached the end of standard support.

Windows 10 Pro Features

BitLocker drive encryption

BitLocker can encrypt a compatible drive to help protect its contents if the computer is lost, stolen or accessed without authorisation.

Remote Desktop host

Windows 10 Pro can act as a Remote Desktop host, allowing an authorised user to connect to the PC remotely from another supported device.

Group Policy

Group Policy provides additional control over Windows settings, security rules, user accounts and connected devices.

Hyper-V virtualisation

Hyper-V allows supported PCs to create and run virtual machines for testing, development or isolated workloads.

Domain join and business management

Windows 10 Pro includes features for connecting compatible PCs to workplace domains and centrally managed business environments.

Windows Sandbox

On supported systems, Windows Sandbox provides a temporary isolated desktop for testing an application or file separately from the main Windows installation.

Windows 10 Pro vs Windows 10 Home

Feature Windows 10 Home Windows 10 Pro
Everyday Windows features Yes Yes
BitLocker No Yes
Remote Desktop host No Yes
Group Policy No Yes
Hyper-V No Yes, on supported hardware
Domain join No Yes

For basic home use without the professional features above, Windows 10 Home may be sufficient.

Windows 10 System Requirements

  • Processor: 1GHz or faster processor or system-on-a-chip
  • Memory: 1GB RAM for 32-bit or 2GB RAM for 64-bit
  • Storage: 32GB or larger drive for newer Windows 10 versions
  • Graphics: DirectX 9 or later with a WDDM 1.0 driver
  • Display: 800 × 600 or higher
  • Internet: required for downloading, activation and updates

These are minimum requirements only. Some Windows 10 Pro features require additional hardware, firmware or network capabilities. Check the computer manufacturer’s specifications before purchasing.

Should You Install 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 Pro?

Most modern PCs should use the 64-bit edition because it supports more memory and is better suited to current hardware and software. The 32-bit edition is mainly relevant to older systems with limited memory or specific legacy compatibility requirements.

  • Check Settings > System > About to view the current system type.
  • Choose 64-bit when the processor supports it and no legacy requirement prevents its use.
  • Use 32-bit only when the device or required software specifically needs it.

Changing from 32-bit Windows to 64-bit Windows requires a clean installation. This removes installed applications and can remove personal files, so create a complete backup before starting.

How to Download and Install Windows 10 Professional

Your order includes the product key, Microsoft download guidance and clear step-by-step instructions. The installation method depends on whether Windows is already installed.

Clean installation

  1. Back up all important files.
  2. Create Windows 10 installation media using Microsoft’s instructions.
  3. Start the compatible PC from the installation media.
  4. Select Windows 10 Pro when asked to choose an edition.
  5. Complete the installation and enter the supplied product key.
  6. Connect to the internet and confirm that activation has completed.

A clean installation can remove files, applications and settings. Confirm that everything important has been backed up before proceeding.

Reinstalling Windows 10 Pro

When reinstalling Windows, the edition selected must match the licence. Install Windows 10 Pro rather than Windows 10 Home before entering the Pro product key.

Upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro

An activated Windows 10 Home installation can normally be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro without formatting the drive or reinstalling applications.

  1. Save your work and make a backup of important files.
  2. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Select Change product key.
  4. Enter the supplied Windows 10 Pro product key.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart the PC when requested.
  6. Return to Activation settings and confirm that Windows 10 Pro is activated.

Your existing files and installed applications should remain in place during an edition upgrade, although keeping a current backup is always recommended.

How to Activate Windows 10 Pro

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Open Activation.
  4. Select Change product key.
  5. Enter the supplied 25-character Windows 10 Pro key.
  6. Select Next and complete the online activation process.

Before entering the key, check that the installed edition is Windows 10 Pro. A Windows 10 Pro key will not directly activate an installation that still shows Windows 10 Home unless the edition-upgrade process is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Windows 10 Pro key for one PC?

Yes. The licence is supplied for activation on one compatible PC.

Does the key support both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 Pro?

Yes. The product key is for the Windows 10 Pro edition. You select the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit installation for your compatible PC. Changing an existing 32-bit installation to 64-bit requires a clean installation.

Is Windows 10 still supported?

Standard Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 continues to operate, but normal free security updates, feature updates and Microsoft technical assistance are no longer supplied.

What is Windows 10 Extended Security Updates?

Microsoft’s Consumer Extended Security Updates programme provides eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 personal devices with critical and important security updates until 13 October 2026. It does not provide new features or general technical support, and enrolment is separate from this Windows 10 Pro licence.

Can I upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro without reinstalling?

Yes. An activated Windows 10 Home installation can normally be upgraded by entering the Windows 10 Pro product key in Activation settings. Files and installed applications should remain in place, although a backup is recommended.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 Pro on the same PC?

Reinstallation on the same PC is normally possible. Install the same Windows edition and use the original activation details. A significant hardware change may affect activation.

Can I move the retail licence to another PC?

A retail licence can be more flexible than an OEM licence, but it may be active on only one PC at a time. The licence must be removed from the previous device, and transfer or reactivation can depend on the original activation state and hardware changes.

Will I receive a disc or USB drive?

No. This is a digital product. The product key, download guidance and installation instructions are supplied by email.

Should I buy Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro?

Choose Windows 11 Pro when the PC is fully compatible and you want a currently supported operating system. Windows 10 Pro is mainly appropriate for compatible older hardware, legacy software or specialist environments that still require Windows 10.

How quickly will my product information arrive?

Your Windows 10 Pro key and instructions are delivered digitally after the order and payment have been processed. Check the inbox and junk or spam folders of the email address used for the order.
