Ecokeys Support Team
3 minute read

If Word, Excel, Outlook or another Microsoft Office application is not working correctly, repairing Office can often fix the problem without uninstalling it.

There are two repair options: Quick Repair and Online Repair. Start with Quick Repair unless your Ecokeys Support Check has specifically asked you to use Online Repair.

Quick Repair Usually a few minutes
Online Repair Can take considerably longer
Difficulty Easy / Guided
Your documents are not normally affected Repairing Microsoft Office does not normally remove your Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations or other files you have created.

Before You Start

Save anything you are currently working on and close all Microsoft Office applications, including:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • Outlook
  • PowerPoint
  • Any other Office application
Start with Quick Repair Quick Repair is the faster option. If it does not solve the problem, return to this guide and complete Online Repair.

Step 1 — Open Your Installed Apps

Windows 11: Right-click the Start button and select Installed apps.

Windows 10: Right-click the Start button and select Apps and Features.

Step 2 — Find Microsoft Office

Find the Microsoft Office product you want to repair.

Select the three dots beside the Office product if they are shown, then select:

Modify
Only one Office application has a problem? That is fine. Microsoft repairs the Office suite as a whole, even if the problem is only affecting Word, Excel or another individual Office application.

Step 3 — Select Quick Repair

A window should appear asking:

How would you like to repair your Office programs?

Select:

Quick Repair → Repair

Allow Windows to complete the repair.

Let the repair finish completely Do not repeatedly click Repair, open Office while the repair is running or switch the computer off during the process.

Step 4 — Restart Windows

When Quick Repair has finished, restart your computer:

Start → Power → Restart

When Windows has restarted, open the Office application that was having the problem and test it again.

Did Quick Repair Fix the Problem?

Yes — Office is working normally Return to your Ecokeys Support Check and confirm that the problem has been resolved. You do not need to run Online Repair.
No — the same problem remains Continue below and complete Online Repair.

Step 5 — Run Online Repair

Return to your installed applications and find Microsoft Office again.

Select:

Microsoft Office → Modify

This time select:

Online Repair → Repair

Follow the instructions shown by Microsoft and allow Online Repair to finish completely.

Online Repair is the more thorough option Microsoft recommends Online Repair when a more complete repair is required. It can take longer than Quick Repair, so allow enough time for it to complete.

Step 6 — Restart and Test Office Again

When Online Repair has completed, restart Windows again.

Open the Office application that was having the problem and check whether it now works normally.

What If Online Repair Does Not Fix It?

Stop troubleshooting at this point Do not repeatedly run Online Repair and do not uninstall Office unless your Ecokeys Support Check specifically asks you to.

Return to your Ecokeys Support Check and select:

Online Repair completed but the problem remains

We will use the troubleshooting steps you have already completed and move you to the appropriate next stage without asking you to repeat them.
