How to Take a Screenshot for Ecokeys Support

Ecokeys Support Team
2 minute read

A screenshot is simply a picture of what is showing on your computer screen. Sending the complete error message often helps Ecokeys identify the correct fix without asking you several extra questions.

Approximate time 1–2 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Changes your computer? No
Before you start Leave the error message or problem visible on your screen. Do not close it yet.

Step 1 — Open the Screenshot Tool

On your keyboard, press these three keys together:

Windows key + Shift + S

Your screen should become slightly darker and the Windows screenshot controls will appear.

Step 2 — Select the Complete Error Message

Move your mouse to one corner of the error message.

Hold down the left mouse button and drag around the complete error window.

Release the mouse button when the whole error message is inside the selected area.

Please include the whole message Try not to crop tightly around just the error code. Seeing the complete window and the information around the error can help us identify the problem much more quickly.

Step 3 — Save the Screenshot

After taking the screenshot, a small preview may appear on your screen.

Select the preview and then select the Save icon.

Save the picture somewhere easy to find, such as:

  • Desktop
  • Pictures

Step 4 — Upload the Screenshot to Ecokeys

Return to your Ecokeys Support Check and select:

 Upload Screenshot

Choose the screenshot you just saved.

If You Cannot Save the Screenshot

That is fine. After pressing Windows key + Shift + S and selecting the error message, the screenshot is usually copied automatically.

If your Ecokeys Support Check allows you to paste an image directly, click inside the upload or message area and press:

Ctrl + V

What Should the Screenshot Show?

Where possible, include:

  • The complete error message
  • The error code, if one is shown
  • The name of the Microsoft product or application
  • Enough of the surrounding window for us to understand where the error appeared
Don't worry if it isn't perfect We would rather see a little too much of your screen than have an important part of the error message missing.

If Your Screen Looks Different

Windows can look slightly different depending on the version and computer.

If Windows key + Shift + S does not work, return to your Ecokeys Support Check and choose the option advising that you are unable to take a screenshot. We will not stop you from requesting support because of this.
